Issues
• Need for police sensitivity training (teen issues, diversity, etc.)
• The few existing teen activities available are not well publicized
• More mentors are needed
• Parental involvement is lacking
• Parental communication needs improvement
• Questions as to how the city government disperses available funds
• Safe places needed for kids to go, without harassment
• Teens have trust issues with police and authority figures
• Parental sheltering vs. protection
• Police officers no longer visit schools to connect with kids (i.e., assemblies)

Solutions
• High School officers should act as student advisors - not just disciplinarians
• Teens/parents need to attend BOE meetings
http://www.norwalkpublicschools.org/index.html
• Organize teen intervention sessions with local police officers and educators
• Rick McQuaid to contact NHS Guidance Counselor, Dan Sullivan, about activities
• Teens to focus on giving respect, as a tool to gain respect
• Parents need to use good listening techniques, when speaking to their teens
• Parents need to accept responsibility and get involved
• We adults need to consider actions that will put forth our ideas
• Reach out to the media for help in publicizing future activities

Closing Thoughts from Meeting Participants

***************************************************************************
People expressed feelings of frustration and being overwhelmed after this activity.
A teen present was surprised that the adults were so aware of the struggles that her peers face.
She thought that sometimes adults seemed to dismiss the real challenges
that are out there in the world for today's teens.

Discussion - Resources and Solutions

The discussion was opened up for people to share their thoughts on the resources
and solutions that we have available to us in our community.

Sharing included the following -

Time is a major resource to share with our teens
We need to catch our teens doing things right!
Patience is required
Don't talk at them - listen!!
"Scared straight" programs might be required
Think about the different target audiences
It's about all of our teens
Mentoring has been shown to be effective
Get to the kids earlier rather than later - middle school
After school programs - most crime involving kids happens between 3pm
and 8pm .
Social activities to engage teens - create effective programs that they
will attend e.g. LIFT program at the YMCA uses the "carrot" of making a music CD or
video
Track and sports programs also attractive - e.g. basketball

Involve communities/neighborhoods
Show that the adults are there for them
Find out what programs are available
Make information available on NNHT website
Find out where the funding is - foundations,
local corporations and businesses
Develop job skills
Home visits to help with parenting skills

Where do we go from here?

Meet once a month
Different locations so that meeting is
accessible to different neighborhoods
Invite more teens and listen to what they want
Each person bring a teen with them to the next meeting
Develop website
Each person bring information about programs to next meeting
Share information about programs / resources
Consider making NNHT 501(c)3 for funding
